How Long Document Translation Actually Takes, and Why
Realistic turnaround for document translation in Pakistan, what makes one page take longer than six, when urgent delivery is worth paying for, and the steps around translation that actually set your deadline.

“How soon can you do it?” is the first question most clients ask, and usually the wrong one.
The more useful question is when you actually have to submit, because in most document files translation is not the slow part. People routinely pay double for same-day delivery on a document that then sits waiting three weeks for an embassy appointment.
What actually drives turnaround
Legibility, first and by a distance
A clean, typed, recently issued certificate is quick. A 1990s Nikah Nama with faded handwriting overlapping a printed form is not, and the difference is not marginal.
Most of the time on a difficult document is spent reading it, not translating it. Deciphering a registrar’s handwriting, working out whether a column says one thing or another, deciding whether an entry is genuinely illegible or merely difficult. That work does not show in a word count.
This is why we ask to see the document before quoting a timeline. A page is not a page.
Density
A three-page employment contract in dense legal Arabic can take longer than a six-page certificate that is mostly headings and blank fields. Academic transcripts are deceptive too: a single sheet can carry forty rows of subjects, marks, and grades, every one of which has to be reproduced exactly.
Formatting
Where the layout has to be rebuilt rather than copied, the work grows. Tables, multi-column transcripts, seals and stamps described in position, signature blocks. Translating into Arabic adds right-to-left reconstruction, with numbers and Latin-script codes running the other way inside the text, which needs manual handling.
Volume and consistency
A ten-document family visa file is not ten separate jobs. Names, dates, parents’ names, and place spellings have to be consistent across every document, because that cross-check is exactly what a reviewing officer performs. That consistency pass is a real part of the work and a real part of the value.
What does not drive turnaround as much as people expect
Page count on its own. Useful for a rough quote, poor as a timeline predictor.
Language pair, mostly. English to Arabic runs slower than Arabic to English because of layout reconstruction, but the gap is smaller than the gap between a clean document and a faded one.
Whether it needs certification. Attaching a certificate of accuracy adds little time. Notarization is different, because it depends on a third party’s schedule rather than ours.
The urgent question
Urgent options exist: 24-hour delivery at 1.5x to 2x the normal rate, same-day at 2x subject to availability.
Before paying for either, ask what happens after we deliver.
Urgency is worth it when the translation is the last step before submission, you have a booked appointment within days, or an employer needs the file to release an offer.
Urgency is wasted when the document still needs attestation, an embassy appointment is weeks out, a credential evaluation is pending, or you are waiting on someone else’s document to complete a set. In every one of those cases the bottleneck is elsewhere and speed here buys nothing.
This is why we ask about your submission date rather than your preferred delivery date. Sometimes the honest answer is that standard turnaround is fine and you should keep the money.
“Subject to availability” on same-day is a real condition, not a formality. If a deadline is not achievable we say so before you commit, rather than accepting it and missing it.
What slows things down at your end
Every one of these turns a quick job into a slow one, and all are avoidable:
- Unclear photographs. Flash instead of daylight, angled instead of flat, corners cut off. If we cannot read it, we have to ask, and that is a day.
- Missing pages, particularly reverse sides carrying stamps or endorsements.
- No passport copy, so names cannot be matched and have to be queried.
- Documents sent one at a time over several days, which prevents the consistency pass until the last one arrives.
- Unclear requirements. “Just translate it” leads to questions about certification, direction, and format that could have been settled in the first message.
- Approving the quote late. Work starts when the price is confirmed.
The fastest clients send everything at once: all pages, both sides, passport copies, the destination, the deadline, and the checklist.
Where translation sits in the real timeline
For a typical Gulf employment or family file:
| Step | Who controls it | Rough scale |
|---|---|---|
| Obtaining NADRA or educational originals | Government offices | Days to weeks |
| HEC or IBCC attestation | Government | Weeks |
| MOFA attestation | Government | Days to weeks |
| Embassy attestation | Embassy | Days to weeks |
| Translation | Us | Standard turnaround |
| Submission and processing | Employer or authority | Weeks |
Translation is one of the shortest steps in the chain and the only one you can reliably compress. Which is precisely why it is rarely the one worth compressing.
Two documents also carry validity windows, police character certificates and medical reports, so translating too early can be as unhelpful as too late. The MOFA attestation checklist covers that sequencing.
What we commit to
You get a specific timeline with your quote, before work starts, not a vague estimate. If the deadline is not achievable you are told before you commit. If urgency will not help because the bottleneck is elsewhere, we say that too, even though it costs us the urgent rate.
Send the document, the deadline, and where it is going on WhatsApp. See the pricing page for standard and urgent rates.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a standard document translation take?
Most single documents such as a CNIC, birth certificate, or police character certificate are straightforward and fall within standard turnaround. Multi-document files and dense legal or academic material take longer. We confirm a specific timeline with your quote rather than quoting a blanket figure, because legibility affects it more than page count.
What makes one document slower than another?
Legibility first, then density, then formatting. A faded handwritten Nikah Nama column can take longer to read than a clean six-page contract takes to translate. Tables, multi-column transcripts, seals, and mixed-direction Arabic layouts all add time that has nothing to do with word count.
Is urgent delivery worth paying for?
Only when the translation is genuinely the last step. If your file still needs attestation, an embassy appointment, or a credential evaluation, paying 2x for a same-day translation buys you nothing because the bottleneck is elsewhere. Tell us the actual submission date and we will say whether urgency helps.
What do urgent charges cost?
Standard delivery is at the normal price. 24-hour delivery runs at 1.5x to 2x the normal rate, and same-day at 2x, subject to availability. Availability is a real condition rather than a formality, and we will decline a deadline we cannot meet instead of accepting it and missing it.
Can you translate a whole visa file in one day?
Sometimes, but ask before planning around it. A multi-document family or employment file involves cross-checking names, dates, and place spellings across every document, and that consistency check is a large part of the value. Rushing it is where errors enter.
Why do you ask when I am submitting rather than when I want it?
Because those are usually different dates, and knowing the real one lets us tell you whether you need to pay for speed. Several documents also carry validity windows, so translating too early can be as unhelpful as translating too late.
What slows things down on the client side?
Unclear photographs, missing pages, missing reverse sides that carry stamps, no passport copy for name matching, and sending documents one at a time. Each of those turns a same-day job into a two-day conversation.
Do you work on weekends or holidays?
Urgent requests are handled on availability rather than a fixed schedule. Send the document with your deadline and we will give you a straight answer about whether it is achievable, including when it is not.
